Our Partnership
At Samuel Ward we are committed to working in partnership with our pupils and their parents to achieve the best for every student. Review Days have helped us to strengthen this partnership and develop a better understanding of each pupil.
What is the review interview?
The review interview is a meeting between an individual pupil, parent and a Learning Coach. They discuss what the pupil has achieved, consider areas for improvement and agree up to three action points and targets. Every interview should be attended by a parent, relative or carer so that all concerned have a clear understanding of the child’s progress and targets.
How is the day organised?
There are no timetabled lessons on review day and pupils are expected to work at home before and after their interview. They are expected to attend for a twenty minute interview, arranged at whatever time is convenient to the learning coach and the parent or relative. Private supervised study facilities are available in school on those days for any pupils wishing to use them. If you need to use this facility, could you please return the slip on the accompanying letter. On occasions, however, special revision classes will be run for targeted groups of students on these days in order to help them prepare for examinations and/or complete vital coursework. All students identified within those groups are expected to attend these lessons.
What happens before the interview?
You will be asked to choose a time for your appointment. This may be anytime between eight o’clock in the morning and five o’clock in the evening. Teachers will have suggested targets for the pupils and these will be recorded in the pupils’ planners. The pupil’s planners will be collected in before the day of the review, so please go through any targets set by the teachers before then.
During meeting time pupils will also answer a series of questions in their planner to prepare them for the questions they will be asked during the interview.
Please arrive a few minutes early. Your child will show you to the room where the interview will take place. We expect school uniform to be worn as this is a formal interview; pupils should bring their progress checks along on the day of the review.
What happens during the interview?
We encourage the pupils to do most of the talking. This is to help them to take responsibility for their own learning. We will discuss the progress check with them and as well as how they are progressing socially including their involvement in enrichment activities. This will include looking at the BFL assessment and converting it into a numerical score to be entered into the pupils’ planner. When action points are agreed they are also written into the planners.
